Barbara Ives Couch

Barbara Ives Couch died January 11, 2017 of complications from Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA) in Crestview Hills, KY. Barbara was born March 20, 1936 in Meriden, CT to Julius and Elizabeth Ives. Raised on a dairy farm, Barbara graduated from Meriden High School and Central Connecticut State Teachers College. Barbara married Charles Couch in 1960. They remained married for 45 years until Charlie’s death in 2005. They raised a family of three boys in a neighborhood full of friends in Fairfield, CT. Barbara also managed the office of Home Buyers Assistance Corp. for 20 years and later Independent Mortgage. She was active in the Fairfield Jr. Women’s Club, Trinity Episcopal Church, the Red Cross, and several other charities. Barbara was a proud New Englander who never let her subscription to Yankee Magazine lapse. Upon retirement, Barbara and Charlie embraced their love of travel with several trips to Europe. They later retired to Cape Cod where they had spent many happy vacations with their sons.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law and two grandsons: Peter and Sarah Couch, son Paul, of Crestview Hills, KY; Alan and Kathe Couch of Ludlow, VT; and Jonathan Couch and Susan Curtin, son Julius, of Decatur, GA. Barbara is also survived by her sister Nancy Kobs and husband Donald of Myrtle Beach, SC; sisters-in-law Carol Couch, Dale White, and Susan Andresen and husband Arnold; as well as nine nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Salerno, brothers-in-law Bill Couch, Ed White, John Salerno, and niece Kristen Andresen Simmons.

A memorial service will be held February 11, 2017 at 11am at Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport, CT. She will be interred in the memorial garden at the church.

The family will be forever grateful to the staffs of Atria Summit Hills, Senior Helpers, and Hospice of the Bluegrass for the care Barbara received in her final months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Red Cross, Bluegrass Care Navigators, Massachusetts General Hospital (Fund 028184 for CAA), or the charity of your choice.
